Introducing Nylon 12 for FDM - 15 Jan 2014

Nylon 12 parts built on a Stratasys Fortus 3D Production System are the toughest in the industry!

Nylon 12 parts built on the Stratasys Fortus 3D Production printer exhibit 100-300% better elongation at break and superior fatigue resistance over any other additive manufacturing technology. Nylon offers users the best Z-axis lamination and highest impact strength of any FDM thermoplastic, as well as excellent chemical resistance.

FDM Nylon 12 is ideal for applications that demand high fatigue endurance, including repetitive snap fits and friction-fit inserts. Aerospace and automotive applications include custom production tooling, jigs & fixtures along with prototypes for interior panelling, low-heat air-intake components and antenna covers.

For product development in consumer goods, FDM Nylon 12 makes durable prototypes for snap-fit panels and impact-protective components.

if you are already a Fortus user your current machine can be retrofitted to take Nylon 12 this is at launch available for the Stratasys Fortus 360, 400 & 900 systems. FDM Nylon 12 is initially offered in black, and is paired with SR110, a new soluble support material optimized for FDM Nylon 12. Support removal requires virtually no labour and is conveniently washed away in the same cleaning agent as other FDM soluble supports.

What nylon material is Stratasys offering?

FDM Nylon 12 (unfilled) is the first nylon material that can be 3D printed with Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. It has been highly-demanded by customers and compliments Stratasys current FDM materials portfolio.

Unique part capabilities and properties include:

- Snap fit and press fit inserts: tough small clips, bosses, posts and holes
- High fatigue resistance: parts exposed to repeat loading cycles, stress & vibration
- Good impact strength: parts resistant to shock from being dropped or abrupt forces
- Moderate temperate resistance: HDT of up to 82°C (after annealing)
- Good chemical resistance: resistant to moderate solvents, alcohols and chemicals

Application best fits include:

- Panels, covers, housings with snap fit clips, bosses, and other small features
- Environmental control ducting and venting
- Components of products with high vibration, repetitive stress or fatigue
- Drill guides, cutting fixtures and prototypes with friction fit press-in inserts
- Prototypes and end use parts requiring tough bosses or threaded inserts

Target industries include:

- Automotive: interior panels, environmental control ducting
- White goods: panels, covers, vibration resistant components
- Home appliance and consumer electronics: covers, panels and facades
- Aerospace: tooling, manufacturing aids, jigs and fixtures
